Machine A can be defined as either the specific Viewsonic P815 or as the generic plug and play monitor. In either case, the Matrox on Machine A cannot display more than 60Hz as the refresh rate. Everything you said makes perfect sense, and as I describe here, it doesn't change the outcome how I define the monitor.

What you need to do is to start the Update Driver Wizard for the display adapter from Display Properties or from Device Manager. Then you need to click Show all hardware, select (Standard display types) and change to the Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA). Don't worry that it's described as a PCI adapter;

So I boot to VGA mode and change to the STB drivers. Again I get the message that the drivers had been installed correctly (after being warned about installing a third party driver).
